Today’s Startup: IndoorAtlas

Today’s internet startup IndoorAtlas offers a complete toolbox for indoor positioning without additional hardware. The innovative positioning solution enables businesses and individuals to create indoor location-awareness applications for store promotions, mobile gaming, logistics efficiency or just finding one’s way around inside shopping centers, airport terminals, etc.

The ancient innovation for ocean navigation – the compass – is poised to solve navigation problems indoors, where there is little or no GPS coverage. This is thanks to an innovation by a research team at the University of Oulu, Finland, which today released a program for application developers consisting of indoor mapping tools, software licenses and a cloud-based mapping service.

Many animals utilize local variations in the Earth’s magnetic field to find their way around. These magnetic variations commonly exist inside buildings as well. Many sources can contribute to these variations including Earth’s magnetic field, and the structures of the building. Modern smartphones can sense and record these magnetic variations to map indoor locations. IndoorAtlas is the world’s first company to offer this exciting new technology.

IndoorAtlas Floor Plans
To get started with indoor location awareness, you upload your building’s floor plan to IndoorAtlas Maps using ‘Floor Plans’. Floor Plans makes it easy to align your building’s floor plan with the geographic coordinate system.

Map Creator
After adding the floor plan, can use the ‘Atlas Map Creato’ (an easy-to-use mobile application) to create magnetic maps for the buildings you added. You can map part of a floor, the complete floor or even multiple floors. To create a magnetic map, just open your floor plan in the Map Creator, mark a planned path on the screen and walk it! Finally, you can create your own location-awareness application using the IndoorAtlas Maps API. 

Maps API
The Maps API makes creating indoor-location applications easy. The API connects with IndoorAtlas Maps behind the scenes and provides your app with a precise indoor position. You only need to implement a callback function for position update events in your application, from there on it’s up to your application’s business logic.
